Google’s new found strength in online commerce is built on the combination of their advertising platform mixed with their new payment system. Also, Google can streamline consumer buying as they have integrated into one solution the bulk of retail online activities including searching, advertising, buying, and payment processing. Its hard to sell retail on the Internet without crossing into at least three of these four areas.
At some point in your retail sales quest you will have to cross paths with Google and with this in mind you may want to go ahead and get integrated from the start. Its faster and a heck of a lot more convenient. Google fees and charges are also slightly cheaper than PayPal.
PayPal’s best online sales solution is a combined package which is not only welcomed by shoppers but super convenient for sales merchants. Their new service is aimed at providing small and medium sized businesses secure & cost effective online payments package. Its called Website Payments Pro but so far its only available in the US.
From their web:
Get the features of an internet merchant account and payment gateway, plus much more - at a lower cost. Website Payments Pro is:
- Powerful. Control your checkout from start to finish, and integrate PayPal with your order-management system and shopping cart.
- Complete. Accept credit cards directly on your website just like a merchant account. You don’t need a separate merchant account and gateway.
This ‘all in one’ PayPal solution not only allows online sellers to quickly add PayPal to their shopping cart, but also acts as an ‘in house’ merchant account and accepts direct credit card payments without the hassle of a separate merchant account. The service also includes Direct Payment API and Virtual Terminal functions.
Direct Payment API allows buyers to enter card details directly on the business’s own website for processing through PayPal. Virtual Terminal allows online businesses to accept orders off line via phone, fax or mail. Details of these payments and sales are then entered by the merchant separate from the client’s online experienced. This popular package solution is a bit more expensive than Google’s Checkout but equally as effective.
The only difference I can find in comparing these two giants, is PayPal’s history of fighting online fraud and providing security for their sellers. This statement from their web would push me to sign up with PayPal, if I were trying to choose between the two. Here is my deal maker:
Get industry-leading security. We have industry-leading fraud-prevention systems in place - and help fight chargebacks for you. Plus, you can control your level of risk - to allow only the types of transactions you prefer.
Google, by some accounts, is still somewhat open to fraudsters and credit card crooks. For a start up web, chargebacks need to be avoided - like the plague. For that reason, I’d have to choose PayPal Website Payments Pro.
No matter what solution you may choose for selling products on the web, it seems that in the past year or so most major online payment giants are determined to make your business succeed with a minimum of set up and expense. Every online retailer wants those precious shopping dollars and as shown above they are presenting great solutions for present and future clients.
